Summary: The property was great. Right on the waterfront with the beach a very short walk away. Very rocky beach so water shoes are a sensible item to acquire! The sound of the sea was easily my favourite part especially waking up to it. The road to it is a little challenging on the suspension in your car if you're not used to driving in Sicily. I was travelling alone with friends joining me later with a car and I felt quite out of it until they came but that was what I wanted for a few days. It's so remote and the town itself has very little in it apart from a couple of small grocery shops, a bakery and a bar/gelateria. This is part of the charm but I was glad I had friends joining me later in the week as the walk up the hill was a real lung buster! The kitchen is well prepared for cooking meals and if you ask for a food parcel they're happy to oblige - this was gret and lasted me the week. Great accessibility for Mount Etna and Toarmina which I highly recommend as day trips as well as the Alcantara gorge for swimming where the water is freezing but the gorge is amazing! Carruba train station is only abut a 20 minute walk but it's up a very steep hill and I certainly recommend getting a transfer to and from the apartment if you have a lot of luggage as the walk is steep! I took the train into Catania and you can easily travel around the main towns on that line but do be aware not all trains stop there and the station isn't manned and doesn't have a ticket machine so buy online before you board. Check your timings for the return leg as you might find your train doesn't stop there later in the evening and you'll have to get back from Catania or Giarre. If you're coming from Catania the train will probably stop but in the other direction you might have to pass Carruba to come back. Don't be an idiot like me and brave the walk from Giarre home - it's not a fun one! I loved my time in Sicily and especially at Praolia as it was so peaceful and tranquil but I would have loved stronger wifi and signal for the evenings as it was very patchy. If you're looking to escape from everything then this isn't a problem and you can entirely disconnect from the world!
