Positive: After several nights in Sicily's baroque cities we were looking for a quiet affordable rural property with a good pool and outside space and this ticked all the boxes. Set on a mountain in pretty gardens (herbs, fruit trees etc) with amazing views towards the sea, the rooms are bright and airy, the owners are kind and attentive, the pool is great (natural stone and salt water), and we loved the breakfast (eggs to order, ricotta, meats and cheeses, fresh-made cake, Madre's own fruit and honey etc). The communal kitchen is a great idea (we bought fresh fish in Donnalucata and cooked at 'home'). Great location, too - in the middle of nowhere but only 15-20 minutes drive from Ragusa, Scicli and the coast. Our 3-night stay was the highlight of our 10-day Sicilian holiday. Bravo!

Negative: Our only issue was lighting. The lights in the rooms are incredibly bright (I would have liked a low, subtle lamp - instead I hung a hat out over one of the bedside wall lights!. The outside lights are equally bright and there is no way to turn them off at night (even those on your own terrace or balcony). I understand you need security lighting but there is more than sufficient lighting on the paths to guide you. But this is being picky: Madre is a great place to stay - I would definitely return.
