Marsala is an Italian city located in the western part of Sicily. It was founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century B.C. and was subsequently influenced by various civilisations, including the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans. These influences are reflected in the city's architecture and culture. The city is home to several attractions, including the Whitaker Museum, which exhibits a collection of Phoenician and Punic artefacts, and the ancient archaeological site of Lilybaeum, where the ruins of a Roman city can be admired. The historical centre is fascinating, with its narrow, winding streets, lively squares and well-preserved historical buildings. There are also numerous churches of interest, such as the Cathedral of St Thomas the Apostle and the Church of the Purgatory. Also not to be missed are the crystal-clear water beaches and picturesque promenade, where you can relax and enjoy the sea. Marsala is known for its liqueur wine called 'Marsala', which has been awarded the Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC) and is appreciated all over the world. Overall, it is a place that fascinates visitors with its food and wine, its authenticity and its link with the past.
